How to Talk About the Weather in Spanish

Weather in Spanish

Basic structures to describe the weather in Spanish

When learning Spanish, one of the first things we talk about is the weather (el tiempo). Just like in English, Spanish uses different expressions depending on the type of weather. Today, we’ll learn some simple and useful phrases!

Using HACER (to make/do) → Used for general weather conditions

  • Hace calor → It’s hot
  • Hace frío → It’s cold
  • Hace viento → It’s windy
  • Hace sol → It’s sunny

📝 Grammar note:

  • These expressions use the third person singular “hace” (from the verb hacer).
  • There is no direct translation in English, but it literally means “it makes heat”, “it makes cold”, etc.

Using ESTAR (to be) + Adjetivo → Used for temporary weather conditions

  • Está soleado → It’s sunny
  • Está nublado → It’s cloudy

📝 Grammar note:

  • These expressions use the verb “estar” in the third person singular (está).
  • If we say hace sol and está soleado, both mean “it’s sunny”, but hace sol is more commonly used in everyday conversation.

Using HAY (there is/there are) + Sustantivo → Used for weather phenomena

  • Hay tormenta → There is a storm
  • Hay niebla → There is fog

📝 Grammar note:

  • We use “hay” (from the verb haber) when talking about the presence of something related to the weather.
Talking about temperature

Talking about temperature:

  • En Valencia estamos a 12ºC → In Valencia, we are at 12ºC.
  • En Berlín están a -3ºC → In Berlin, they are at -3ºC.

Really enjoyed my week at this school. Teachers are very enthusiastic and the school is very social with activities. I like that the lessons switch during the week Between morning and afternoon. So not every lesson is in the morning or afternoon. Acces to the ‘virtual aula’ and more learning contents is definitely a plus. My size group was perfect, 7 people. But I also saw larger classes, which I think are too big for interactive learning

Finally I totally recommend Taronja in Valencia!
I have learned a lot en espagñol!
Before my course I could speak nada, but afterwards not directly fluently, but I can talk with people and friends now de España, who I met here during my stay and of participating on actividades de escuela.
Everybody is very polite and open for questions, especially about espagñol 🙂
Summary I would choose this escuela otra vez!

Hi guys! I'm Elena, a 30yo Italian girl from Venice. I spent 3 weeks in the beautiful city of Valencia 4 years ago, it was my first vacation in Spain and I decided to start learning the language doing a course in Taronja. What a great choice! Days passed by super quickly, I really enjoyed the time I spent there as I felt part of a huge family. They propose interesting activities every day and night and during the week end, supporting people in interacting and meeting new friends. I learnt a lot, Professors were kind and professional and the method they use is the best I tried up to now. I planned my vacations in Barcelona, Malaga and Madrid, always matching with Spanish lessons, during the following 3 years but Taronja remains my favourite. Swapping courses timing every day gives you a lot of free time to go to the beach or visit the city. Nice idea the cooking lessons, too! Super positive feedback for you guys! That's why I decided to come back this August to spend a month with you! See you soon Elena

Brilliant school, good activities Absolutely brilliant, I've attended other schools to learn Spainish, and by far is the best. Good teachers, good learning pace, lots of vocab work and lots of opportunities to practice speaking. Classes are good mix of grammar, and practical things to say and there out of school options are by far the best. If you're learning in Valencia this is the school I recommend to study at by far!!

I came to Taronja on a friends recommendation and I am so glad that I did! I only did one week intensive and am already signing up to do more lessons. The classes are interesting and fun. The teachers are enthusiastic. Also the daily activities are really well organised. Fully recommend for anyone - no questions asked 🙂

Taronja school has a very special atmosphere. Just being in the school is an immersive language leaning experience. The teachers are enthusiastic and great at engaging everyone in the lessons. As each lesson is with a different teacher, we experienced a range of teaching styles and ways of explaining the nuances of the language, which further improved our understanding. The students in the classes are varied too, of all backgrounds, ages and languages. Highly recommended. I hope to be able to return.
